Alienhits loves… Bridget Marquardt and the Girls Next Door!

My biggest guilty pleasure on TV is the Playboy reality show, Girls Next Door. Most reality TV, save for my other fav--Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels, is filled with manufactured drama. Girls Next Door is certainly manufactured, as are 95% of the body parts on display, but it’s refreshingly drama-free.
Instead, the series relishes in its own campy nature. Episodes are always fun, never a downer. Each of the three main girls has a distinctive personality or (since this is reality tv) “character-type.” There’s Kendra the tomboy, Holly the Queen Bitch (without being very bitchy at all), and my personal favorite, Bridget Marquardt.
From her perma-grin to her obsession with Halloween and scary/campy movies, this is a girl after my own heart. Just looking at her makes me smile.
It’s hard to describe why I love Bridget so much. Maybe it’s her ever-optimistic personality, or maybe it’s the way she gets overly excited and obsessed about things. Maybe she just reminds me a little of myself.
Of course, I’m not a playboy bunny, but it’s amazing how “non-porn” the show is. Nude pictorials and magazine covers in GND are treated as commonalities--a day-to-day part of the job. It’s not particularly sleazy or glamorous. In fact, despite living in a mansion and traveling and hobnobbing with celebrities, all three girls are refreshingly down-to-earth. They’re the type of people you’d want to hang out with--the kind of celebrities that would gladly stop and pose for a picture because they’re just so grateful that they have fans. (And they should be--I mean, they’re certainly not possessing of some enormous talent, at least in the traditional sense).
And more than that, they’re bubbly. Bubbly and self-effacing, which is a rare combination in reality TV. If they’re stuck up, they certainly don’t act like it (unlike most reality stars). It’s a shame that the series is ending this year, due to all three breaking up with Hef. I heard that Kendra’s getting her own spin-off, and I’m sure I’ll check it out, but I’m really waiting for the Bridget show. From her aversion to hoity-toity foods to her insistence in dressing up in a costume for every event, reality TV needs someone like her. And it’s not like she doesn’t have enough hobbies to base a series around. Maybe she could moonlight as a ghost hunter? Talk show host? Trapeze artist?
