The Vamps - Wild Heart

"She's so beautiful, it made me stay"

I was quite surprised by the amount of success the Vamps have had this year in the UK with their debut single Can We Dance. Not because they don't deserve it (they totally do), but because the track seemed to come out of nowhere and then stick around the upper echelon of the charts for a long time. I really think these guys could be Britain's next Mcfly. We need another young, rock-based pop band. Can We Dance was a total hit from the first listen. I don't like Wild Heart as much, but I still think it's the kind of song that will do really well for them. They're kind of following One Direction's lead and going for a folkier sound to offset their cheeky image. Their debut album should be good. Can't wait until it's released next year.

Night Terrors Of 1927 - Young And Vicious

"You never know what you got 'til it's gone"

I've been delving back into a lot of 90's music in the past week or so and realizing that I really need some good new alternative rock in my life. Night Terrors Of 1927 is getting some hype surrounding their EP, oftentimes being compared to a moodier Killers. That's pretty dead on, and definitely not a bad thing. This is a bit of a slow burn, but perfect for these cold winter nights. And there's just a hint of the anthemic in here, even though that's an adjective a lot of reviewers seem to be pinning on these guys. But you know I take my anthems seriously. I can't just throw around the descriptor willy nilly, though I think it may be in these guys' future.

Britney Spears - 'Til It's Gone

"You never know what you got 'til it's gone"

Let's just pause a moment and remark on the fact that Britney Spears remains a viable pop star fourteen years after bursting on the scene with Baby One More Time. It's really pretty amazing that she's managed to outlast so many others, especially since her vocals are not known to be spectacular. What she's done so successfully, though, is become a muse for fantastic pop producers. More often than not (especially in her more recent songs), she sounds like the guest on her own tracks, her vocals shifted and sliced and caressed to fit whatever awesome production her collaborators have given her. And while she does a lot more "singing" on her new album, it's still those massive productions that are the standouts. Nothing's bigger than 'Til It's Gone, with its huge sledgehammer beat and ultra processed vocals. It's an awesome example of Britpop (and not the UK version) at its best.
